- Well, I've got a copy of the AMIGA Hardware Reference Manual (ISBN
- 0-201-11077-6), written by Commodore Business Machines. It's the one from the
- AmigaDOS 1.1 era, and it documents just about everything about the hardware.
- I've also got the Intuition Reference Manual written by RJ Mical, and I get
- the distinct impression that he viewed using Intuition as an option, with
- direct hardware programming the other option.
- I also get the impression that when the A1000 came out, they viewed it as a
- cool piece of hardware, which happened to include a nice operating system.
- The mere existence of the AMIGA Hardware Reference Manual, and the tone of the
- Intuition Reference Manual certainly condone hardware banging, as the OS of
- the time didn't take full advantage of it.
- I've heard that Commodore really didn't have any firm programming rules
- until the AmigaOS 2.0 era, perhaps because the A3000 made it clear that the
- hardware would change? In any case, Commodore did at one time tell
- programmers it was okay to do hardware banging. Of course, there's no excuse
- for it these days, when we know that the PowerAmiga is in the works.
